About This Tour
Just a few hours from Samarkand, Penjikent offers a fascinating introduction to the history of ancient Sogdiana and the culture of the Zeravshan Valley.
After crossing the Uzbek–Tajik border, continue to Penjikent and begin with the Rudaki Museum, whose collection includes archaeological finds and remarkable wall paintings discovered at sites throughout the valley.
The next stop is Penjikent Bazaar, a chance to experience a very different side of the city. Browse stalls filled with fresh produce, local goods, handicrafts and clothing while taking in the rhythm of everyday life in modern Penjikent.
On the return journey to Samarkand, stop at Sarazm, an ancient settlement with a history stretching back more than five thousand years. The visit includes the archaeological site and the Sarazm History Museum.
In a single day, the journey brings together several layers of the region’s history, from the earliest settlements and the legacy of Sogdiana to Penjikent as it is today.
Tour Itinerary
Depart Samarkand
Leave Samarkand and travel towards the Uzbek–Tajik border, passing through rural landscapes, orchards and cotton fields along the way.
Cross the Border
Complete border formalities and meet your local Tajik guide on the other side before continuing to Penjikent.
Rudaki Museum
Visit the Rudaki Museum, home to archaeological finds and wall paintings from sites across the Zeravshan Valley. The collection provides an introduction to the region’s history, art and Sogdian heritage.
Penjikent Bazaar
Explore the city bazaar and experience Penjikent as locals do. Its stalls offer fresh produce, local goods, handicrafts, traditional clothing and souvenirs.
Sarazm
On the way back, visit the ancient settlement of Sarazm and its history museum. With more than five thousand years of history, Sarazm is one of the region’s most significant archaeological sites.
Return to Samarkand
Continue to the border after visiting Sarazm and return to Samarkand.
